Packaging with “MOTTAINAI” Philosophy

We have been developing sustainable packaging since 1926, the year we introduced our first refillable product inspired by the philosophy of “万物資生”, the origin of our name. The types of packaging that followed include biomass containers, recycled PETs, and low-temperature burning materials.
Our target is to achieve 100% sustainable packaging by 2025 with our 5Rs:

  • “Reduce” (e.g., thinner and lighter packaging),
  • “Reuse” (e.g., refilling),
  • “Recycle” (e.g., packaging that is easy to dismantle and separate),
  • “Replace” (e.g., development of biodegradable packaging),
  • Supplemented with “Respect” to manifest our respect for the Earth.

A new refill service for the iconic ULTIMUNE Power Infusing Concentrate. Inspired by the “MOTTAINAI” spirit of Japan and designed to reduce environmental impact.

Customers can bring empty ULTIMUNE bottles to the SHISEIDO GLOBAL FLAGSHIP STORE in Ginza, Tokyo where they will be cleaned and refilled.

Q:What has been your most memorable experience this year?

A:A Beautiful Connection

I experienced a moment of pure beauty in Indonesia earlier this year. I got to surf the most amazing wave all alone. I was surrounded by nothing but perfect waves and crystal-clear water, and it really allowed me to connect with Mother Nature.
For 2021, I hope to achieve the goals I originally set for 2020: win a Gold Medal and a World Championship.

Q:What has been your most memorable experience this year?

A:The Beauty of Helping & Being Helped

An unforgettable experience of 2020 was my first marathon, which was also my first crowdfunding project. I ran the marathon to support my friend Koji Suzuki, who was diagnosed with ALS and to raise awareness of this currently incurable disease. I’ve experienced the beauty of helping and being helped. I finished the marathon thanks to the power of love and support.

Niky is a German-Japanese artist born and raised in Tokyo. She now lives a nomadic life between Europe, Japan and the US.
Alongside her commercial work, Niky sees art as a tool for social change and peaceful activism. She believes it is the most compelling way to address the urgency of our time and the growing need for a healthy planet.

Q:What has been your most memorable experience this year?

A:The Happiness of Sharing

During lockdown, in partnership with the French Charity "Les Restos du Coeur", we made bread for people in need. Not gourmet or sophisticated bread, but useful bread – bread for surviving. We helped to feed people, literally. I’m struggling to describe how it made me feel. I rediscovered the happiness of sharing and what sharing is.

Paris-native Thierry Marx is one of the most distinguished chefs of his generation.
Trained by some of France’s best chefs, his background is inimitably unique. After 2 years military service, he travelled the world to hone his craft.
Now, with a career spanning 30 years, he has received numerous Michelin Stars, featured in TV’s "Top Chef", and in 2013 was appointed Knight of the French Legion of Honour.

Q:What has been your most memorable experience this year?

A:Looking For Positives

2020 has been a great reckoning for me. It made me slow down and think about where I want my life to go from here. My proudest moment of the year was releasing my first book, "The Red Flame" on Rizzoli. I also rediscovered my love of music and started my "Radio Redhead" series.
My goal for 2021 is to make more music, release my 3rd album, and build on my creative outlets.

Supermodel, musician and mom-of-two Karen Elson burst onto the scene at 18, gracing the cover of Vogue Italia. Since then, she has remained one of the biggest names in fashion – working with the most renowned photographers, designers and brands.
Now based in Nashville, Karen also serves as ambassador for Save the Children and is a staunch advocate for children’s rights around the world. In October 2020, she released her first book: The Red Flame, an honest and vulnerable retrospective of her incredible 25 years in fashion.
